Concrete, Paver, and Retaining Wall Contractor for Camp Hill

Camp Hill has been its own borough since 1885, and many of its homes have the details that come with age: a single-car driveway squeezed between houses, a front walk tipped and cracked by decades of roots and frost, and a stone or block wall holding up a back yard that slopes toward the next street. When something finally gives, or when you’re ready to replace a worn driveway or add a patio, you want a contractor who has worked on lots like yours and will tell you plainly what yours needs.

We’re about as close as a contractor can be. Camp Hill shares its eastern border with Lemoyne, where Terra Firma Concrete is based, so most Camp Hill addresses are roughly five minutes from us. Matthew looks at every job in person and gives you a written contract with transparent pricing before work starts.

Our crew does the excavation, concrete, and masonry itself, so the wall, the base, and the surface on top are built by the same people on the same schedule.

Retaining Walls, Pavers, and Concrete Work in Camp Hill

Camp Hill’s 17011 ZIP code reaches well past the borough line into the townships around it, and we work throughout: older homes near the center of the borough, the neighborhoods beyond it, and commercial properties along the West Shore.

Retaining Walls in Camp Hill

If you need help with a retaining wall in Camp Hill, PA, the wall you have now usually tells the story. Bulging, leaning, or a long crack that steps up through the mortar joints almost always points to water and backfill behind the wall rather than the face itself. The soil behind it stays wet, pressure builds every rainy season, and eventually the wall moves.

We build retaining walls in dry-stacked block or poured concrete, and the work that keeps them standing happens below grade: a footing set deep enough for the height, clean stone and a drain behind the wall, and backfill compacted in layers. When an old wall has failed, we take it down, correct the drainage, and rebuild it on a proper footing.

Planning a patio on the high or low side of a wall? We sequence the wall, the excavation, the drainage, and the patio as one project, so nothing has to be torn up later to fix what came first.

Paver Driveways and Patios in Camp Hill

Pavers suit Camp Hill’s older homes well, especially for narrow front driveways and back patios where a wide gray slab would look out of place. As a paver contractor in Camp Hill, we install paver driveways, paver patios, and paver walkways in the borough and across the West Shore, backed by the same in-house excavation and base work we put under our concrete.

Here is what goes into one. We dig out the old surface and the soil below it, deeper for a driveway than for a patio. Crushed stone goes back in and is compacted layer by layer until it’s firm. A thin layer of bedding sand sets the final grade, the pavers are laid in the pattern you’ve chosen, and the joints are swept full before the surface is compacted. Along every edge without a wall or curb, an edge restraint keeps the outside rows from wandering.

Pavers are also forgiving. Water seeps through the joints and drains away through the stone, so frost has less to lift, and if a gas or water line under the driveway ever needs work, the pavers come up and go back down without leaving a patch.

Torn between pavers and poured concrete? The first FAQ below lays out the trade-offs, and Matthew can walk you through them on site.

Concrete Driveways, Walks, and Repairs

Not every Camp Hill driveway calls for pavers. Poured concrete is still the simplest choice for a long driveway or a two-car pad, and it’s what most front walks and steps in the borough are made of. When concrete is failing, we start with why: a tree root lifting a walk, a downspout washing out the base, or a slab poured too thin decades ago. Sound slabs with minor cracks can be sealed, a lifted or sunken panel can be cut out and replaced to match the grade of its neighbors, and a slab that has failed throughout comes out and is rebuilt from the base up.

If the borough has sent you a sidewalk or curb notice, Camp Hill asks owners to submit a zoning permit before repairing sidewalks or curbs, and it warns that parging (skim-coating) a heaved panel usually fails ADA slope requirements. Replacing the panel is usually the more reliable fix.

Excavation and Site Prep in Camp Hill

Side yards in Camp Hill are often only a few feet wide, and some back yards can be reached only through a gate. Our compact mini track loader gets through openings like that, so grading, sod removal, foundation drainage, and driveway tear-out don’t mean taking down a fence. We call PA One Call before every dig so buried utilities are marked first. More on our excavation services page.

Camp Hill Driveway, Paver, and Retaining Wall Questions

ARE PAVERS OR POURED CONCRETE BETTER FOR A CAMP HILL DRIVEWAY?

Neither wins everywhere. Pavers give you more choices in color and pattern, can be repaired one unit at a time, and flex slightly with frost instead of cracking. Poured concrete usually costs less for a large area and gives a smooth, uniform surface that’s easy to shovel.

On a narrow Camp Hill driveway beside an older house, pavers often look more at home. On a long or wide driveway, concrete’s lower cost tends to win. Either one lasts when the base under it is dug, compacted, and drained properly, and either one fails early when it isn’t. If you’re undecided, Matthew will price both for your driveway.

CAMP HILL SENT ME A SIDEWALK OR CURB NOTICE. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Camp Hill sends sidewalk and curb notices to owners whose properties are within the area of upcoming street resurfacing, or when a formal complaint names a specific address. Before any repair, the borough asks you to submit a zoning permit, and its ordinance 2018-001 sets out the sidewalk and curb rules. Send us the notice and Matthew will price replacing the panels or curb it lists. We won’t recommend parging over a heaved panel, since the borough notes that usually fails ADA slope requirements.

DO I NEED A PERMIT FOR A NEW DRIVEWAY OR PARKING PAD IN CAMP HILL?

Yes. Camp Hill requires a zoning permit to install a driveway or parking pad. Size matters too: once the impervious coverage added on a property passes 500 square feet, the borough requires a minor stormwater permit, and it counts projects cumulatively, so several smaller projects over the years can add up. We’ll go over the square footage with you and tell you what to file before the work is scheduled.

DOES A RETAINING WALL IN CAMP HILL NEED SPECIAL APPROVAL?

The wall’s purpose usually decides it. Camp Hill exempts engineered retaining walls that hold back a slope from its fence-and-wall regulations and allows them in every zoning district; a freestanding decorative wall is treated differently. Because every site is different, we check with the borough about your wall’s height and location before construction, and if a wall needs engineering, we’ll tell you up front.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A PAVER DRIVEWAY IF A UTILITY LINE UNDER IT NEEDS WORK?

It comes apart and goes back together. The pavers in the work area are lifted and set aside, the trench is backfilled and compacted, the base is rebuilt, and the original pavers are reset. Done carefully, you won’t see where the work happened, which isn’t true of a concrete slab that has been cut and patched.

CAN ONE CREW HANDLE THE WALL, THE GRADING, AND THE PATIO?

Yes. A sloped Camp Hill back yard often needs all three: the yard is cut and graded, a retaining wall holds the high side, and the patio, in pavers or concrete, goes on the level ground. Our crew handles the excavation, the masonry, the concrete, and the pavers, so the pieces are planned together and built in the right order under one contract.
