SITE PREPARATION
Clearing, leveling, and preparing your site for concrete, masonry, or structural work. We assess conditions, mark utilities through PA One Call, and get the ground ready for what comes next.
Every concrete and masonry project starts below the surface. We handle the site prep, grading, drainage, and demolition that makes everything above it possible — so your investment lasts.
Most homeowners never think about what’s underneath their driveway, patio, or retaining wall — until something goes wrong. Cracks within the first year, water pooling against the foundation, a retaining wall that starts leaning after one freeze-thaw cycle. Nine times out of ten, the problem isn’t the concrete or the masonry. It’s the groundwork that was rushed or skipped entirely.
At Terra Firma, excavation isn’t a side service — it’s the foundation of everything we build. We handle all site preparation in-house with our own equipment and crew, which means the same team that digs your foundation is the same team that pours it. No handoffs. No miscommunication between contractors. No shortcuts that show up as cracks six months later.
We evaluate soil conditions, drainage patterns, and grade requirements before we move a single shovel of dirt. Every excavation is conducted in accordance with PA One Call services to protect underground utilities. The base gets compacted properly. The drainage gets routed where it needs to go. It's the work nobody sees — and it's the reason our concrete and masonry projects outlast the competition.
Our compact mini track loader lets us access tight residential spaces that full-size equipment can't reach — backyards, side yards, narrow driveways. We get the heavy work done without tearing up your entire property in the process.
From initial site clearing to final grading, we handle every phase of excavation for residential and commercial projects.

Precision grading to establish proper slope and drainage. Sod removal for patios, walkways, and driveway expansions. We set the grade right so water moves away from your structure, not toward it.
French drains, footer drains, and foundation drainage systems to protect your investment from water damage. Installed during excavation so the drainage is built into the project from the start.
Full removal of existing driveways, slabs, and concrete surfaces. We handle the breaking, loading, haul-off, and site prep so the new pour has a clean, properly compacted base to sit on.
Our compact equipment accesses tight residential spaces — backyards, side yards, narrow lots — without tearing up your property. Ideal for projects where full-size machinery won't fit.
All excavations are conducted in accordance with PA One Call services. We coordinate utility locating before any digging begins to protect underground lines and keep your project safe and code-compliant.
Most concrete and masonry contractors sub out their excavation work. That means a different crew shows up to dig, a different crew shows up to pour, and nobody is fully accountable for the connection between the two.
At Terra Firma, excavation is part of our core operation. Matthew scopes the dig, our crew executes it, and the same team transitions directly into the concrete or masonry phase. One point of contact, one timeline, one standard of quality from the first shovel to the final finish.
Every excavation project is conducted by a licensed PA Home Improvement Contractor (HICPA #168581), fully insured, and in full compliance with Pennsylvania One Call utility locate requirements. Your property and your project are protected from the first dig.
In most cases, yes. Proper excavation and base preparation is what determines whether your concrete lasts 5 years or 30. Even for a simple patio, the existing soil needs to be removed to the right depth, the subgrade needs to be compacted, and drainage needs to be addressed. We’ll assess this during your free site visit.
Our compact mini track loader is specifically designed for tight residential access — side yards, fenced backyards, narrow driveways. If there’s a 4-foot opening, we can usually get through. Matthew will confirm access during the site visit and plan the approach accordingly.
PA One Call (811) is Pennsylvania’s utility locate service. Before any digging begins, we’re required by law to have underground utilities — gas, electric, water, sewer, cable — marked on your property. This protects you, your property, and our crew. We handle the entire coordination process so you don’t have to.
Yes — that’s one of our biggest differentiators. We handle excavation, grading, drainage, concrete, and masonry all in-house. One crew, one timeline, one point of accountability. You don’t need to coordinate between multiple contractors.
It depends on the scope — how much material needs to be removed, the soil conditions, access constraints, and whether drainage work is needed. We provide a clear, written estimate after the site visit so you know exactly what the excavation portion of your project will cost before any work begins.
